With the use of skilled scientific assessments of joints, muscles, ligaments, fascia and neural tissues, physiotherapists are able to identify the dysfunction and then treat it appropriately using a variety of techniques. Treatment techniques used by Chartered Physiotherapists are drug-free, science-based, natural techniques used to restore normal function.
Please note that for your first appointment 10 minutes will be required during the session to perform an assessment.
Here at Central Somerset Physiotherapy we use massage therapy to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body's soft tissues during physical activity. Liz has a special interest in sport massage and is also a member of the Sports Massage Association (SMA).
Getting your sports massage from a Chartered Physiotherapist ensures you are in the best possible hands due to their advanced knowledge of biomechanics and tissue pathology. By ensuring you have a SMA Therapist, you ensure an individually tailored, high quality massage. All members have qualified on the highest level on a SMA approved and recognised course. Ensuring the highest quality of teaching and graduates.
Massage, applied skilfully, is the most effective therapy for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculo-skeletal system. Received regularly this may help prevent injuries, which might otherwise be caused by overuse. A constant build-up of tension in the muscles from regular activity may lead to stresses on joints, ligaments, tendons, as well as the muscles themselves. The skilled massage therapist will be able to detect variations in the soft tissues and by using the correct techniques, help you maintain a much healthier physical state.
Many athletes use regular sports massage to prevent injury. Because massage can accelerate the body's own restorative function, you will be able to train harder and more often. The techniques used by our sports massage practitioners have been developed to ensure effective and efficient results are gained from each massage given.
The reported benefits of sports and remedial massage include:
You do not need to be a sports performer to benefit from massage. Regular massage can also help relieve the stresses and strains of a hectic work schedule or busy social life.
We provide a wide range of treatment tailored to the specific requirements of initial assessment and consultation.

Athletes can benefit from this service and regular Pilates is designed to create balance within your muscles, improve coordination and create a strong core. Birgitte uses hands-on physical adjustments where necessary leading through Physio led Pilates can help prevent wear and tear from getting progressively worse, while maintaining or improving flexibility and mobility.
Pilates turns the body in all directions and orientations. Our professional experienced eye will look for correct movement but also restrictions. Moving in this way shows up any limitations or imbalances, which might eventually result in something more serious. These issues can be addressed and resolved, using physical manipulation and exercise through Physio led Pilates. All the while an experts eye is on your entire movement and body balance.

Acupuncture is a health system that has existed and developed over thousands of years and involves the insertion of fine sterile needles (a painless procedure) into energy points along meridians in the body. Energy (Qi) flows through the body in meridians which connect tissues and organ systems. Health is present when these energies work in harmony with each other.
Acupuncture is an adjunct used by many physiotherapists as part of the management of pain, inflammation and as a means of enhancing the body's own healing chemicals in order to aid recovery and enhance rehabilitation.
The insertion of sterile needles into the body stimulates the brain and spinal cord to produce NATURAL pain relieving chemicals, such as endorphins; melatonin to promote sleep, and serotonin to promote well-being. These assist the body's healing process and offer pain relief as a precursor for the use of other treatment modalities.
Trigger point Acupuncture may also be used to facilitate relaxation in specific muscles following trauma such as whiplash injury or as a means to obtain increased muscle length. Here the needle is placed into the affected muscle until it is felt to relax under the needle and then removed.
All our physiotherapists who practice acupuncture are Members of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP). They are required to train to a minimum standard and are bound by professional codes of conduct through the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and Health Professions Council (HPC).

Physiotherapists play an important role in achieving a full recovery after an operation or illness and are experienced in assessing what may be needed to improve well-being and enhance recovery.
Our experience within both the NHS and Private sectors means we have the contacts, should you require us to implement more specific specialist attention. Patient welfare always comes first. Full recovery requires the best possible care. Sometimes only short term assistance or advice is needed. Other times a scheduled programme of exercises may need to be implemented to give you the best possible chance of improvement and long lasting recovery.
We are flexible and understand that sometimes visiting a clinic can be difficult, cause for concern or stressful - which is where we can help with a pre-arranged home visit. One of our fully qualified practitioners can visit you in the comfort of your own home where they can discuss and treat you to the same high standard you would receive in one of our clinics. Not only does this allow them to assist you in the healing process, they may also be able to suggest changes you could make to your environment that would assist in your recovery and prevention of future incidents.
PLEASE NOTE: Home visits are only currently available within 30 minutes drive of: Wells, Bridgwater and Burnham-on-Sea but are strictly subject to therapist availability.
There is no place like home and for some people it's the very best place to have treatment. We understand that.
Home visits are priced to location and appointment requirements, call us for an informal chat to discuss.
