Here at Central Somerset Physiotherapy we use massage therapy to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body's soft tissues during physical activity. Liz has a special interest in sport massage and is also a member of the Sports Massage Association (SMA). Recieving your sports massage from a Chartered Physiotherapist ensures you are in the best possible hands due to their advanced knowledge of biomechanics and tissue pathology. By ensuring you have a SMA Therapist, you ensure an individually tailored, high quality massage. All members have qualified on the highest level on a SMA approved and recognised course. Ensuring the highest quality of teaching and graduates.
Massage, applied skilfully, is the most effective therapy for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculo-skeletal system. Received regularly this may help prevent injuries, which might otherwise be caused by overuse. A constant build-up of tension in the muscles from regular activity may lead to stresses on joints, ligaments, tendons, as well as the muscles themselves. The skilled massage therapist will be able to detect variations in the soft tissues and by using the correct techniques, help you maintain a much healthier physical state.
Many athletes use regular sports massage to prevent injury. Because massage can accelerate the body's own restorative function, you will be able to train harder and more often. The techniques used by our sports massage practitioners have been developed to ensure effective and efficient results are gained from each massage given.
The reported benefits of sports and remedial massage include:
■ Improved circulation & lymphatic flow
■ Assistance in the removal of metabolic waste
■ Sedation or stimulation of nerve endings
■ Improved muscle length
■ Remodelling of scar tissue
■ Assistance in mental preparation for sporting participation
■ Relaxation and reduction of stress
■ You do not need to be a sports performer to benefit from massage
Regular massage can also help relieve the stresses and strains of a hectic work schedule or busy social life.

Acupuncture at Central Somerset Physiotherapy
Acupuncture is a health system that has existed and developed over thousands of years and involves the insertion of fine sterile needles (a painless procedure) into energy points along meridians in the body. Energy (Qi) flows through the body in meridians which connect tissues and organ systems. Health is present when these energies work in harmony with each other. Acupuncture is an adjunct used by many physiotherapists as part of the management of pain, inflammation and as a means of enhancing the body's own healing chemicals in order to aid recovery and enhance rehabilitation. The insertion of sterile needles into the body stimulates the brain and spinal cord to produce NATURAL pain relieving chemicals, such as endorphins; melatonin to promote sleep, and serotonin to promote well-being. These assist the body's healing process and offer pain relief as a precursor for the use of other treatment modalities. Trigger point Acupuncture may also be used to facilitate relaxation in specific muscles following trauma such as whiplash injury or as a means to obtain increased muscle length. Here the needle is placed into the affected muscle until it is felt to relax under the needle and then removed.
All our physiotherapists who practice acupuncture are Members of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP). They are required to train to a minimum standard and are bound by professional codes of conduct through the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and Health Professions Council (HPC). We provide a wide range of treatment tailored to the specific requirements.
